On December 22 the New York Times sports desk called to see if I could shoot freelancer Nate Vinton and two of his college professors out on a smelt fishing outing the next morning. I dug out the snow pants and headed to Bowdoinham, Maine where I met them at River Bend Smelt Camps on the Cathance River.
We had a great morning of fishing and camaraderie, and as Bowdoin Professor Pete Coviello pointed out, “Melville would have enjoyed the matey-ness and conviviality” of the Maine smelt fishing experience.
