HEATHER PERRY

I’m a photographer, writer, painter, swimmer, and travel guide. I have many passions, but water has been my route to each of them. I was always interested in photography, but as my life evolved and my career came into focus, photography and water became equal partners.

Already an experienced marine naturalist and diver, I started my photo journey with a class on underwater photography at Brooks Institute of Photography, exploring the best of both worlds. I began making photos in the ocean long before anywhere else.

The water is where I feel most myself. It strips away inhibitions and cradles the body and mind like nothing else I have experienced. It simultaneously connects me to my true nature and the natural world — a connection that informs my photographs and makes my life better.

Years into my career, I broadened my horizons into portraiture and travel photography. I further extended my expression into writing for travel blogs and two books on photography for National Geographic. For the last decade, I have guided travelers through exotic ocean environments for SwimVacation and now National Geographic Expeditions. The combination of photography, writing, and guiding grants me the opportunity to completely immerse myself in every aspect of the story being told as it unfolds.

The nature of humanity is incredibly dynamic. To document a subject authentically, I must be able to connect to it. As a photographer of people in and out of the water, connection is my greatest tool. Through the connections I nurture with clients, subjects, and fellow travelers, I dive deeply into a project or experience to deliver truly impactful imagery.

And sometimes, I’ll paint it, too.
